I think my kid used a c++ program and notepad to gain access to my computer how do i find out if he did?

this is about all the info i have. He had used my computer and the command prompt program had been used and also notepad. I never use either one. I did some searching on the net and it seems to me that he may have used notepad and c++ to run a program to allowhim access to my computer from his home computer or maybe his lap-top.

I think my kid used a c++ program and notepad to gain access to my computer how do i find out if he did?
Yeah, and aliens from Mars showed him how to do it...

But seriously, if you are concerned about remote access check the following:

1) Install a good firewall (XP sp2 has excellent built in firewall)

just make sure remote access is blocked by the firewall

2) Make sure you do not have any remote access programs (or spyware) installed on the PC... Good (and free) tools are SPYBOT (at http://spybot.info ) and MICROSOFT WINDOWS DEFENDER (at http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security... )

3) If you are still concerned about remote access when you are not there, just turn off the PC or disconnect from the Internet.

And of course, password protect it to prevent physical access at the keyboard!
Reply:Use the cold turkey method. Deprive him of computer access for one week.

He should break by the second day. ; )
Reply:you can always check the logs to see if anything was run that day, but i dont think there is a concrete way to find out if he ran a program or not. (not to my knowledge at least)
Reply:Anything is possible. Just reformat your computer with the Windows XP cd-rom, and just make a new password for yourself and don't let your kids use that computer again.
Reply:What makes you think he accessed your computer, do the programs cmd and notepad show up when you click on Start-run if so then it means these commands have been typed in there but how would you know he ran a C program?

To do this he would already have to be in the desktop so would have logged into windows already. Use windows logon if you are not and also set a secure password, i.e at least eight characters, one capital and one number in the password.

You could also click on Start- Settings- settings and control panel and look for an icon called Administrator tools, click on that and select event log, you may get some clues here but most stuff will be what windows and your startup programs use.

If you mjean your kid accessed your machine from another machine in his home then use a good router and fully stealth it so remote accessed is blocked.

As a previous reply says, if not using it turn it off, never fails to amaze me the number of people who leave machines on and then complain they have problems, if its not on, it cant catch fire, it cant get a virus, it cant use energy and kill the planet, it cant get data zapped by a thunderstorm/lightning (well the psu might if not surge protected).

Secure password, good router, turned off and surge protected will be good for 99% attacks.

However if your kid is in your home and has access to your machine then nothing can stop him if he has enough time and software tools, he can boot up from a boot disk and roam your hard drive if he had the right disk, he can change the registry , he can load programs all outside of windows. He can reset your router and set his own password, he can configure it remotely and set his own access port to use a program loaded from a boot disk,CD, USB drive. If you dont trust your son then dont let him in your home.
