How can I free up space on Drive C? 12.5 gb are used and .5gb remains. Can't find the huge files.?

Somewhere are huge hidden files that I cannot find. Any suggestions? From the reading I have done, even if I find them, removing them can be perilous. Any utility programs that might help?

Use CCleaner and AdAware to clean you drive.

Also, search for log and text files (*.log , *.txt). If you've had you computer for any length of time, you probably have all sorts of log files on your computer and didn't even know it. A single file may not be huge, but there may be a lot of them. If you are not sure about deleting them, open them and delete the data inside. This way the progams that use them can still find the files.

Also delete everything in your "prefetch" directory. Usuall under the "c:\windows\" directory. This stores pictures and data that is useful for bringing up applications and web pages faster when you visit them again. Every program you have ever opened stored data here. Deleting it will force the programs you use to put a new copy there, but free up space from the files you no longer use. Completely safe.
Reply:The best tool I have found for finding big files is Windirstat.

It gives you a graphical representation of the files, and their size. I have never had a stability issue with it, and it has a relatively small memory footprint.

You can download windirstat from:

Good luck!

Reply:Good advice above.

The 'huge hidden file' you've heard about is probably your page file. It can use large amounts of HDD space, but you do NOT want to be removing it.
Reply:try http://ccleaner.com

Should rid you of some rubbish

Spacemonger is a good tool to visually see the drive as well, but newer versions are paid, there's an older freeware one somewhere - google it
