-Used before the bow and arrow. Was put on the ends of spears to weigh them down.

Nobody is completely sure just what birdstones were used for. One theory is that it is a device for assistance in shucking corn. They certainly may have been used to give added "heft' to atlatls, as you suggest.





These artifacts are often found in burial sites, and certainly may be of some religious significance.
